Research has shown the extensive antiviral effects of curcumin against different viral pathogens like the flu and nominates it as a natural flu remedy.
How does the flu work?
Influenza is commonly known as the “flu,” is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract causing fever, severe aching, and catarrh.
Viruses are very simple microbes that do not have a mechanism to operate fully on their own. Therefore viruses need a host, meaning another living organism, to give them the functions that they lack. The viruses get inside the host’s cells and take it over and then use the host cells functions to replicate. Eventually, the host cell will burst and infect other cells around it.

Curcumin and curcuminoids interfere with the activity of a protein in the viruses used to invade the host cells. By doing so, the curcumin and curcuminoids prevent replications of the virus.
According to a study published in 2009, curcumin can reduce viral replication by over 90 percent in laboratory cells infected with influenza varieties. Curcumin decreased viral replication in infected cells, but also seemed to protect other cells from becoming infected. The researchers suggest that using curcumin-rich turmeric it is viable for assisting in fighting influenza naturally.
In short, the curcumin interferes in the invasion process of influenza viruses, and prevent the viruses from infecting and further multiplying in the body.
